Guca Festival

GUCA TRUMPET FESTIVAL – THE GUARDIAN OF NATIONAL SPIRIT AND TRADITION

Every August, accompanied by the sound of trumpet, gunshots and big fireworks, the largest of all national festivals – Guca Trumpet Festival in Dragacevo begins. Guca becomes the capital of trumpet, and Dragacevo, a region where Guca is located, the Republic of trumpeters – unique in the whole world. That is how this magnificent trumpet manifestation, which has with the course of time grown to be the most important celebration of the people of this region, begins.

All the bands that take part in the contest will be honourably called – the trumpeters of Dragacevo. All the winners at the Festival deserve the flatting title of the best trumpeters of the Festival which has been won in a knightly competition.

With their spiritual and hand-made gadgets the trumpeters will be joined by loom weavers and embroidery makers; tailors, cap makers; cobblers who make “opanak” (traditional footwear which is a part of Serbian national costume), producers of healthy natural foods and drinks (dairy products, corn bread and home made brandy-rakija). Serbian cooks will preparing the famoGuca (6)us dish of the Festival – sour cabbage, boiled beans, roast and grilled meat and some other traditional dishes whose fragrance and taste make you hungry no matter how full you are. Cold and hot plum brandy will be served together with corn bread, cheese and “kajmak” (national dairy dish) – as a starter.

The Festival will also be visited by traditional and folk bands from Serbia and the whole world dressed in their national costumes; with their own dances, songs and music. Their programs will be flavoured with an improvisation of an old wedding ceremony of Dragacevo of the late 19th century.

And then Guca is flooded with rivers of guests from the whole world. They come and, being plunged into unique festival mood, they try to sing and dance to the music of trumpet and to let off all the worries and troubles they have to bear. They open their hearts and souls to let in authentic positive energy that the Festival shares out among all the visitors. There is music and dance from sunrise till sunset – but also from sunset till sunrise. All sorts of dances can be seen on the streets of Guca – kolo of Sumadija, oro of Montenegrin, Macedonian and Bulgarian, the Greek sirtaki, and even the polka. The one who has never danced before will dance, the one who has never sung will sing, and people embrace each other as like close relatives.
